George M. Clifford


Passionate about peacemaking, in the mid-2000s George served as co-convener of EPF’s conscientious objector action group. Several articles on military ethics have appeared on EPF’s website and in EPF’s print and digital publications. He served as EPF’s treasurer before being elected chair of the organization in 2023.

An Episcopal priest living in Boston, he is canonically resident in Hawai’i. Most of his active ministry was as a Navy chaplain. He retired as a Captain at the end of 2005. His assignments included duty at Marine Corps’ Officer Candidates School, the Naval Academy, the Naval Postgraduate School, the staff of the Chief of Chaplains, Pearl Harbor (twice), at sea, and two years in London on exchange with the British Royal Navy.

In retirement, he has served as an interim and supply priest, coached/mentored clergy, taught at the Naval Postgraduate School as a Visiting Professor of Ethics and Public Policy, volunteered as a mediator for the Mediation Center of the Pacific, served on nonprofit boards including the Center on Conscience and War, the Samaritan Counseling Center of Hawai’i, Massachusetts Interfaith Power and Light, and the Nonprofit Net of Greater Boston.
